If it's not dripping on the road, I won't swear to it, but that is probably just gunk it's collected over the years.

It's not dripping on the road, but some of it is fresh

Don't see anything major to start with

The noise in 3rd gear - is it a whine? Does it change tone equal with RPMs? Also take note: It's a pickup; it's not gonna be quiet. There's very little seal between the floorpan and the transmission, tons of noise gets sent into the cabin

Yoke looks good

No torque converter, it's a stick. Not sure what part you were referencing here, but the camera was pointed at the crossmember lol

Is it a 4x4?

Looks like power steering/AT fluid to me. Probably your PS pump since there's no reason for there to be any ATF there since it's a row your own, right? RIGHT?

Looks like a Jeep. They all leak. My XJ bleeds so much I built a deflector to keep the bulk of the oil off the exhaust crossover pipe. It's oiled up pretty much the entire floor pan back to the fuel tank. I'm going to let it bleed though. I call it "Rust Prevention". Oil is cheap. Rust isn't.

Seriously though, yours isn't bad at all, compared to 90% of old Jeeps. Almost all of these old AMC six cylinders leak from the rear main and many (like mine) also piss out the front main. If yours is an auto, it's not uncommon for the AW4 to leak from the trans cooler lines where they enter the transmission case, too. If it's a stick and the clutch isn't slipping (from rear main oil seepage), then I'd just rock it until it can't be rocked any more.

could you photograph/film the bell housing and engine? Have you pulled the fill plug on the transmission? If not do it. The fluid level should be high enough to trickle out.

What does the bell housing look like?

Ah. My statements stand. It's not leaking bad enough to scare me out of driving it to Hawaii, but then again I'm pretty handy with a wrench. Keep an eye on it and worry if things suddenly get a lot worse, but things like oil pan gaskets and rear main seals and transmission front seals usually go slowly over time. There really isn't any way to "blow a seal", they just become noticeable with the passage of time. They usually just leak a little over the years until someone notices.

If you have the cash and you really want to spend it now , then there certainly isn't anything wrong with taking it in and getting a professional to assess/repair the problem, but I'm a cheap-ass and hate spending money until there's a gun to my head.

Important : Check your transmission fluid (kind of a whore on manual transmissions), transfer case fluid (also a whore, and I'm assuming this is 4x4), and engine oil now. Keep an eye on them, just to be safe. It's free and the best way to protect your investment. Low transmission or transfer case oil is a bad thing and there isn't any light on the dashboard that will tell you they're dry. They just slowly melt the bearings into paste... which is a terrible way to die.

What I'm getting at is does that shiny oil continue forward (towards front of vehicle) or to the rear of where the tranny and engine meet.

Kinja'd!!!

This is on the Bellhousing. It is a removable plug. I think you should try to pull it, it is an access to measure clutch travel. I don't expect to do that, but the otherside of the plug should be dry. As well as the housing around it. Any fluid in there may be a sign of a problem.

Kinja'd!!!

This is what's on the inside of that plug.

Kinja'd!!!

You mentioned a whining in 3rd. Check the fluid level. (this is the driver side)

What gearbox is it? My mustang's T5 and a Friends mustang make the same noises, but it isn't something wrong with it, its just noisy. The damp/ leaks on yours must beanother story.

Im pretty sure I have a T5 as well. From what I can tell, I think the Input shaft seal blew. I dont think that was ever replaced, judging by my records. From what people have told me that Echoey sound I hear in third gear is pretty normal with T5s. My friends got me all freaked out. They are both quick to jump to conclusions and got in my head saying the input shaft was bent. I drove her a few hours ago for about 5 minutes (barefoot, it was kinda nice). Shes still shifting ok, but there is an obvious lack of lubrication felt through the shifter. Also, Im pretty sure my 3rd gear synchro is misaligned.

Fluid does come out of the bell housing when I pull that plug. I think my input shaft seal went on a permanent vacation. That would explain every issue I have with the Transmission

hah the barefoot driving, it feels way different than with shoes, i do it often when im wearing flip flops, some say you shouldn't drive with them, because it could get stuck in the gas pedal, so i take them off and drive barefoot.

I read that nibbles is going to help you fix it.Lets hope you both can get the truck going right.

on my car there is a VERY annoying rattling when i floor the gas pedal, caused by the short shifter i bought about 8 months ago. I have waited too long to fix that, im hoping tomorrow im not too lazy and spray lithium grease on the ball joint of the shifter. Mustang forums say that should get rid of it. If it doesn't, i will have to think about going back to the OEM shifter.

Barefoot driving almost feels better. Good on you for installing a short shifter, The T5 shifter is definitely not anything close to short. I might install a different shift lever at some point. I like the looks of the current knob, but It slips out of my hand way to easily. If Im not careful, I'd stall. The thing that sucks is the stock lever is splined 5/8, a very unusual fitting type. So there really isnt any aftermarket knobs for it, if I want to get a different knob, I have to get a different lever as well. Lets hope Nibbles is right and its only the input seal, I dont wanna have to pay to have the trans rebuilt. He and I will have to see tomorrow

Getting a good knob that fits the lever is difficult, i remember at first, i just wanted a black ball from those hursts but the slpine was different, then i saw the short shifter and was in sale so i got the whole thing.

I cant do a short shifter, because truck. It'll be too low. But I want a hurst knob as well, Im pretty sure Hurst makes levers for trucks. I'll have to look into it later, right now I gotta get her running and earn some more cash before I do any modifications. Eventually, If I keep her long enough I really want to lower her onto crown vic or mustang suspension, and rename her the Rangero. But that ambitious of a build is out of the question time wise and financially right now.

Hah that would be cool the Rangero. About the levers im sure there are some out there, And if you cant find, i just remembered that some knobs come with many adapters, and you could pick the one that was fitted for you.

I would need a new lever, none of those adapters are splined. They are all threaded
